Schooling

What are you doing / going to do for schooling your children? Are you planning on public schools? Private? Home schooling? How did you reach that decision?

I think we’re going to try home schooling. Our 4 yo won’t meet the birthday deadline to do school this fall, so we have a year yet before the decision ultimately needs to be made.

I’ve always been excited about the home schooling idea. My husband, however, had always figured that the kids would go to public school. He had a good schooling experience. I did not (socially, anyway) have a good experience and often asked my mom if I could be home schooled. So, while my husband was a bit hesitant, he's willing to give homeschooling a try. I’m eager to see the kids’ different learning styles and how to make it work for them.

I have many many friends who are SOLD on homeschooling and make it work very well for their kids, but I just don't see myself as the homeschooling type. I hated school myself, and don't think I could be as excited and encouraging to my kids about school as I would need to be for them to get anything out of it. Also, I would need to be a little more consistent than I am good at.....I have a hard time being consistent with potty training, much less making sure lessons get taught on sunny days and homework gets done before going outside to play. I do have serious concerns about the safety of public schools though, in light of all the school shootings and more recently, sexual assults in the schools across the nation. I have friends who have done a public homeschool deal, where their kids stay at home, do all the same work as the public school kids, and submit all their assignments to a teacher....mom can guide them and help them, but it's up to them to get the work done and ask the teacher for help via e-mail or co-op time if they need it. That sounds more appealing to me, especially since those kids already get the social aspect (that i think is so beneficial from a public setting) from Sunday school. I might try that.

Karen,

I agree...I'm excited about the homeschooling idea. I definitely want him to be involved with things in the community, but I want to educate my child. Especially in this area - over 35% of children in the Chattanooga area go to private schools - this is for GOOD reason. The public school system in this part of the country is NOT like the system we have in Minnesota. I'd probably be a little more likely to send him in MN, than I am here!

I have also talked with many people who have homeschooled their children. EVERY SINGLE ONE states how it was the BEST DECISION they ever made! From those who had their children in the public school system to those who have homeschooled the whole time, the response is ALWAYS the same! Just homeschool - you'll never regret it!

I have heard that, even if your child does not go to school, he/she can still participate in sports at the school he/she would attend...I might look into that in the way future, if needed.

I like the idea of being able to educate my child in every aspect of life...not having some law, or some other person, decide what he or she needs to know about sex, the world, etc...I think sometimes educators think they are the parent...and, they are not! I want to be the one to tell my child about all of that...and, have my child grow up with a biblical perspective on it all. We are to live in the world, but not be of the world...and, I think that a lot of children are educated to "be" of the world...that is not the case!

We are planning on homeschooling our children. For us, we needed little discussion about the issue. It's not like the schools here are bad or unsafe- we just feel led by the Lord that homeschooling is the best way for our family to educate our children. I have been on a quest to learn, learn, learn all I can about homeschooling because I want to do it "right" and every time I read about it I am more sure that this is a great way to educate a child. I have been greatly encouraged that I CAN do this and have been given a vision of what our homeschool might look like by reading "The 3 R's" by Ruth Beechick, books about Charlotte Mason education and signing up for free podcasts and ezines on the website www.cindyrushton.com I can't begin to tell you what an ecouragement she has been and how great her resources are if you are looking for ideas!
