Kid Devotions

Do you use any special devotion books or Bibles to teach your kids?

I have a devotion book that, for devotion purposes, is one page per day. It doesn’t have any special pictures, and while it’s a kid’s devotion book, it’s not at a preschool level. It chops up the Bible stories in weird ways, too.

I saw The Beginner’s Bible and wonder if that’d be a good Bible to read through with the kids.

As the kids ask questions, sometimes I’m able to tell them a Bible story. But I want to do more. Do you read stories directly out of the Bible to your kids? Do you use a book to help guide their learning about stories?

We have "Bible Time" after dinner where Brian reads out of some kind of picture Bible or devotional book for children. They are now getting a good grasp of the stories but they always remember and understand best when we read the story out of the "real" Bible and act out the story. We dress up and find some props around the house and just have fun. The other thing they also remember and LOVE is a book I got from CBD.com called "Even The Sound Waves Obey Him" by Nancy Kennedy. It is a book of experiments using things around the house to relate to Bible stories. They can still remember the Bible story that goes with what experiment we did months ago. It was nice to have around in winter when we were stuck inside and looking for something fun to do.

Also, another thing we've recently started because they are understanding popular Bible stories more now is to move onto specifically teaching character traits and verses about how God wants us to live and finding teachable moments to explain to them using verses specifically what the Bible says about the situation. We are wanting them to understand that the Bible is relevant in many ways to all areas of our lives- not just teaching them Bible stories that are fun to learn. As I'm sure you've seen in your own houses- it's amazing what they have already learned and understand at such a young age. I have more ideas and things we regarding this topic, but have to stop somewhere. I'd love to hear some practical ideas on the blog about how other families do this!

I'm a huge advocate for the Scripture. I love to keep it as pure as possible, but of course, for pre-K ages that can be tough for them to understand. I will read the Bible and put it into terms that I know they understand as I go. That way, I can add things that relate to everyday life, and I can animate it and ask questions so it's interactive. Lately, I have been making my own projects too. For example, in my own Bible study, I was reading about the armor of God. So for the kids, I drew a picture of a little girl in helmet, breastplate, etc. On the next page I drew all the pieces of armor in random directions. They had to cut out the pieces and glue them onto the 1st picture. Then as they colored it, I read the scripture to them and we talked about what it meant. Finally, I played a Nana' Stories on David and Goliath, and we talked about spiritual armor again. It worked out really well. I think I'll use that format for more ideas and topics. Of course, I am a big fan of talking about God's word "when we come in, go out, and lie down". There are ALWAYS opportunities to have a mini lesson. The question usually is: do I have the energy for it? It's definitely worth it!
