What tips/tricks made potty training a success for you?

We waited 'til 4 yo turned 3, and then she was really ready. She caught on quickly (within the first week) and we had very few accidents.

I'm nervous about potty training 2 yo. He seems much less focused than 4 yo, so I'm wondering if it'll take him longer. He's already asked to sit on the big boy potty, though he just sits there. It's a start though, huh?

I'm eager to hear what techniques, motivators, etc everyone else has used!

We were pretty laid back about the whole thing having read that too much pressure is not good. Both of ours were really good for a while and then regressed. When they regressed we didn't get upset or try to get them to do it and they eventually did it when they were ready. I think my daughter was 2 1/2 and son just 3.

My question is- do you let your kids wipe themselves? I dread thinking about that, but my son is almost 5 and daughter almost 4 and I suppose they need to learn eventually. I just like knowing they are cleaned and cleaned properly. Ugh. Also, they use a seat on the big potty and I don't know how we'll ever give that up! They've both fallen ALL the way in a couple of times and got scared like crazy- so when that seat is not there they hang so hard onto me and are afraid to let go. I would really like them to become more independent with the wiping and not using a seat but don't know how to go about it! Any ideas?

My son was trained in 4 days just after his 3rd birthday. He was ready! My daughter just turned 2 and we are thinking about getting her started also. I think with her we'll do the slow gradual method, rather that the 4-day, stay-at-home, marathon training.

We had luck with a toddler potty on the floor rather than one that fits over a big stool. They seemed to "own" it more. But there are also foldable toddler seats that fit on big stools to transition them slowly. My friend carried hers everywhere she went in a gallon-sized ziplock, until her son was ready to sit on a big potty.

And of course, there was the treats... 2 jelly beans for potty and 4 for poo-poo. By the way, the poo-poo part took way longer for my son than just potty. We went straight to underwear because he didin't differentiate between diapers and pull-ups. So we threw away a few pairs (rather than clean the yucky mess).

An FYI- whenever you do decide to have your kids wipe themselves... make sure your daughter wipes from front to back. I got a kidney infection and was hospitalized when I was 6 for not wiping properly (spreading bacteria and such from back to front). Also using wet wipes might be more effective.
