Household Equipment

What are some tools/equipment you’ve found essential to peace in your household with kids?

This question sounds strange, but I think I’m looking for simple responses.

For me, the everyday appliances are incredible helpers – I don’t know how Moms survived without them for so long. The washing machine and dryer, dishwasher, and microwave are run several times a day.

In terms of resources, the internet has been a lifesaver when it comes to 4 yo’s curiosity. We’ve visited pages about animals and volcanoes. We’ve printed off coloring sheets. We’ve gone to San Diego Zoo’s website and watched live video feed of the animal exhibits there. I look forward to discovering other fun sites! Any suggestions?

I totally agree with the internet and dishwasher thing....I don't think I'd get anything else done without them. I enjoy all of our appliances (except the ice maker in the freezer, I HATE that!) i also have much appreciation for my stereo (it keeps the TV off) iPod and my cell phone, but I find that the equipment I use the most and appreciate the most is the stuff I use when we're not at home.

My double stroller is the best there ever was. It's a Kolcraft Countours double, and its AWESOME! I also wouldn' t want to live without my Moby D. You know, the baby wrap thing? It's WAY better than my baby bjorn or any other front or back pack I've worn a kid in. I have a really bad back, and it doesn't bother me one bit.

Probably my most useful piece of equipment however, still remains my swiss tool. Man, the swiss army knife people are geniouses! I carry mine in my purse always, and it's proven to be priceless many times to always have a screwdriver, and a scissors, knives and saws, bottle openers and a leather punch, and other stuff I haven't even figured out that I need yet. I"m pretty sure it's the best invention ever :)

Jenna -- where'd you get your swiss army knife? Is that something you've always had on you? Is it a recent purchase?

It's good to hear there's a baby carrier out there that doesn't hurt the back. I've had some issues with the baby bjorn really aggravating me. How long can you use the Moby D -- I mean, how old of a baby can you carry in there?

By far, the most fantastic thing I use in our house for my kids, whether they are getting grumpy and starting to fight, or whenever, is the...ready?...

Kids praise songs and ditties! If I need to, I will put that on in the house and everyone starts singing and dancing and the grumpiness just melts away. Also, it is so nice in the car! We don't really need movies anymore. We just did a 4 hour car trip yesterday to do shopping, and they didn't ask for a movie once! We just listened to the songs, and the books on CD--which are so valuable likewise. Then they store away the word of God in their hearts while they dance--brilliant!

The first thing that came to my mind- though I'm SURE there are better answers somewhere in my head is...my kitchen shears. Yep- I use it for everything. It's great for cutting up the kid's food small without ruining the plate with knife, cutting raw meats, cutting veggies, cutting off the plastic on the freezy pops and not caring if it gets juice on it, etc etc etc
