It's been fun to watch the kids wake up to streamers and balloons in the house on their birthdays! We usually open a couple presents in the morning, and then do their favorite dinner and cake at night. (Though, I'm reconsidering that sugar-rush so close to bedtime!)
So far, we've only done family birthdays, getting together with my mom and brothers since they live so close. But I'm wondering if we should be including friends in parties. We don't do any super-mega-theme parties or anything. We've celebrated here at home, at a McDonalds playland, and at Bounce (an indoor inflatables place).
What have you done in the past? (And what do you hope to do in the future, if you have any fun ideas.)
Birthdays are pretty low key at our house. We decorate with a few balloons and birthday banner the night before so the kids wake up to this special surprise. We have a favorite meal and cake either as a family or invite a close family friend since we don't have any relatives close by. And though we don't really have a "party" the kids think it's great to put on a special table cloth and wear party hats and get a few gifts. The kids are still small so it's the little things that get them all excited! I plan to buy a special fun plate to use for the guest of honor on special days like birthdays or other occasions- just to add another element of "You are special!"
we had a "you are special" plate growing up that I really enjoyed on whoever's birthday. I should do that now, Amy. Thanks for the reminder!
My twins' birthdays are two days before Halloween. Not being a fan of Halloween, I try to overshadow it by putting on a really big costume party. We have a lot of family in the area, and we've just had them over...but all the adults have to dress according to the theme, as well. We've done Cowboys and Indians, Farmer party, Calling all Zoo Animals (everyone had a diff. animal mask and had to make the sound), Tea Party (that was the first and only time my grandfather ever drank tea instead of coffee! We also had a pie-walk) and The Kentucky Derby (we had a full-on stick-horse race--even the adults!). When we invite friends too, we get around 30+ people! so we have to stick to family for now. Every age has so much fun, that each year I start planning for it a couple of months out! For our 3 year old, we do it much more low-key with a cute theme for decorations, and then a family dinner. I get kind of excited about all this! Hee hee!
