Mountains of Laundry

How and where do you keep your dirty laundry prior to washing it? Do you have any sort of storage system?

While we have a separate laundry room, it shares its narrow space with a 3/4 bathroom. There isn't space in there to set up a storage system. I really like to see how much from the different categories there are -- whites, cold colors, warm colors, etc. (Is this normal?!) But I'm not sure how to do this without just having piles of clothing scattered on my bedroom floor. HELP!

We have piles in each room...I sort as I wash, but I have a pretty big laundry room, so it's not a problem. I just keep a basket/hamper in each room.

we have a semi-decorative basket at the end of the hallway in a central location. At the end of the day, everyone helps by putting their dirty laundry in the basket and when it gets full we just wash the whole load.

It's probably terrible, but I don't do too much in the area of sorting other than colors versus whites. And of course sheets and towels get washed separately from everything else too. I used to do more sorting, but I HATE laundry, and get overwhelmed easily if there's a lot, and it seems like the # of loads pile up on me if I wait for enough of a certain category to run a load.

I'm with Jenna (but to the extreme). I wash everything in cold. That way I can mix it up and nothing gets ruined. My mother would have a hissy fit if she knew. :-)

I am into organization though, so here are some ideas. (1) You could put a white basket, a red basket, and a black basket in the kids room, or the bathroom, or even the hallway. Tell them white is for white clothes, red is for any other clothes, and black is for towels and underwear. (cold, warm, and hot wash) (2)you could do small loads every day or every other day and then you could just see what you have rather than having to dump out the laundry or sort it at all. (3) Instead of storage baskets, you could hang pillow cases or other bag from the wall and sort that way. Up off the floor there is always more space.
